The children of SOFKIN enjoyed a festive December and welcomed in an exciting New Year. In early December, SOFKIN held its first annual Sports Day. SOFKIN received assistance from Magic Bus – a Hyderabad NGO that works with poor children to ensure they complete secondary education and develop the skills required to transition successfully into the work world – to conduct the event.
The Sports Day games included a running race, kabaddi, and handball. All the children and staff participated in the games. Medals were given to children who won races and trophies awarded to teams who won team events. Three special medals were given to Hansika, Peter, Gangareddy for honesty and fair play.
On Christmas morning, the children dressed in beautiful dresses and shirts, and visited the nearby
Holy Family Church for the Christmas service. They then participated in a holiday activity that has become an annual SOFKIN tradition – helping to prepare and distribute food to indigent people on the street. As the tradition, the older children donated their lunch towards the food. This year the meal included Biryani rice cooked with spices and vegetables, along with cauliflower and potato curry, accompanied by curd raita. After helping to package the food into 100 packets, the children distributed the much needed meals to their poor and homeless neighbours. Christmas night, the children presented skits and opened their Christmas gifts, which they loved.
A New Year’s Eve celebration was organized by one of the SOFKIN children, Parmesh, who serves as SOFKIN’s event manager under the guidance of our program coordinator, Jhunu Auditto, on December 31. The fun-filled day included games like spelling words, drawing competitions, a talent show, and distributing prizes to the winners of the activities. After dinner, the children had a dance party and cut the Happy New Year cake!
We are happy to announce that for the first time, SOFKIN is introducing a unique internship opportunity for American students –come and stay in the SOFKIN home in India for 2-4 weeks during the summer (mid June to late August). The interns would choose a focus area to share with the children (public speaking, technology, nutrition, or others), develop a plan, and then teach it to them during their stay in the SOFKIN home. We welcome high school and college students who are committed to and passionate about service, and share our beliefs that every child can excel with a nurturing and encouraging environment, to submit an application. For more information about this program visit our website: http://www.sofkin.org/internship-programs. If you think you fit the requirements, we’d love to have you apply.
We hope you will be able to join us at the Inauguration and Celebration of the New SOFKIN Homes! You’ve heard about them for the last few years, and now at long last, they are just about complete. On March 22, in Hyderabad, there will be singing, dancing, blessings, and excitement! RSVP today, and be there to see what your support has created!
