GROWTH, LESSONS, AND REFLECTIONS ON 2024

2024 was a year filled with festivities, challenges, and growth for SOFKIN. We added 21 children to our family, many of them sibling sets. This puts us over 100 children in Hyderabad location, in addition to the 2 homes that we support at Maher, taking us to a total of over 150 children all together. At SOFKIN, we work to maintain a strong family connection and keep siblings together to help them through a challenging time in their lives.

Even as the children grow older, they maintain their bond with us throughout their lives. As adults, they become a part of our Alumni Group. They become mentors to the younger children still at SOFKIN, just as older brothers and sisters would in any family.

WELCOME INTO THE FAMILY

Three of those children who grew up in SOFKIN are now married, building families of their own! In 2024, our first girl child, Mythri, was married in a festive celebration which included many of her SOFKIN family. Niveditha, who was married just over a year ago, welcomed a baby boy and celebrated the Naming and Cradle ceremony with all the children.

LEARNING AND CARING

Education is always important. Our students do very well in school. In fact, eleven students took their board exams in 2024. All of them passed with flying colors and moved into the intermediate programs. There are also four students pursuing their college degrees.

Three times a year they package up one of their meals for a day to share with those who are destitute and often homeless. The older children and some of the staff take these food packets to those on the street, in homes for the aged, and hospitals. They share a kindness in gratitude for the kindness they have been shown. The children sacrifice by fasting from one meal. They then cook up the food and the older children and staff members share these care packages over 100 people in the surrounding area.

SUPPORT AND CELEBRATIONS

We are lucky to have so many volunteers teaching both academics and arts to the children. Special Thanks to Sudha Devulapalli of Kalanjali Dance School, which is in the US, and her student Sruthi, for teaching dance lessons to SOFKIN children via zoom. Sudha visited the children in person in Hyderabad to also offer some in person classes.

Many of our sponsors and donors both from the US and India, visited in the year 2024. We’re grateful Dr. Jagdish Babu, from Soorya Hospital, Dr. Ammaji (pediatrician), Dr. Jwala (dentist), Dr. Prakash Row (ophthalmologist) for their services to the medical needs of our children.

We were also visited by Lioness Club members, the HR Team from Aizant Drugs Research Solutions (a Pharma Company), Hand in Hand & FMC Technology, PamTen, and students from Shiva Shivani Institute of Management, who volunteered their time with the children. These guests taught and played with the children, brought along gifts and supplies, and provided an opportunity for some festive times.

Speaking of festivities – what would a year be without celebrations and festivals! While Chaya and Prasad Tenjerla were in India, the children enjoyed a special day out at Dr. Jala’s farmhouse in Moinabad. They all enjoyed cooking a special meal and having a fun day on the farm.

Each month holds a reason to come together for special occasions. From Sankranthi in January to Christmas in December, the children plan festive activities to honor key holidays. Flowers, bright colors, dance and special food mark the high points of the month and create memories for a lifetime.

AN EVEN BETTER YEAR TO COME

2024 was a very good year for SOFKIN. The love the children feel, and the success they have, is thanks to the generous support of our donors. You have created these loving, caring homes that help once desperate children thrive beyond their dreams.
